Erased

John 8:6 – Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with His finger, as though He did not hear.

Yesterday I preached on the finger of God. There are three places where it’s recorded that He wrote something.
The first is found in Exodus 31:18, He gave Moses two tablets of the Testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
Here is the Law. The Law wasn’t given to give salvation, it was given to show sin. (Rom 7:7)
Not one of us can keep the Law, much less the Ten Commandments. We fail in every thought, word, and deed. By definition, we are sinners.

God wrote something again during the days of Daniel. Dan 5:5 – In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
This time He wrote of message of judgment – this is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” Dan 5:26-28
The same could be said about every person – our days are numbered and we are found weighed in the balance and in need [of salvation]. We are given away [to hell] because of our sin.

Then God wrote again in John 8 when a woman caught in the act of adultery was brought before Him. She was cast down and her accusers demanded she be stoned.
Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground.
Unlike the previous two times, what He wrote is unknown. Foot traffic and wind quickly obliterated any trace of what was written.

I think that says something in itself.
Your faith in Jesus wipes away what was previously written – you’re a sinner doomed to judgment.
Whatever He wrote on the ground that day demonstrates His grace, love, and forgiveness.
Truly as those words were erased by the wind, His other words stay true – I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more. Jer 31:34
