What is the greatest sin of all?
Some may say murder. You determine to take a life that is not yours to take. This would include abortion, where an innocent life is terminated.
The sin of adultery betrays the covenant and trust that a husband and wife have made to each other. Like murder, it destroys lives of entire families, though all keep living.
I could go on with stealing, abuse, molesting, gossiping, drunkenness, lying, and the list goes on.
God listed Ten specifically and expounded upon each individually.
Jesus gave a clue to the greatest sin of all!
He had been betrayed with a kiss by a close friend. He had been mocked in a makeshift trial that was illegally transacted in the middle of the night. They proclaimed Jesus guilty of blasphemy and demanded His death.
This religious court, known as the Sanhedrin, had no power to execute Him so they sent Him to the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate.
It is at that time this conversation takes place.
Then Pilate said to Him, “Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?”
Jesus answered, “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” John 19:10-11
My first thought was Judas, since he was the one that handed Jesus over.
Then I thought the Sanhedrin, who sent Jesus to Pilate in order to get a death penalty.
But what is the real reason Jesus was arrested, condemned, and crucified?
Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures 1 Cor 15:3
It was for my sins!
It was for your sins!
He was delivered to Pilate for the purpose of dying for the sins of all mankind.
God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8
This is my conclusion.
It was the greater sin that handed Jesus over to Pilate to be condemned to be crucified. The greater sin is committed by all of us, since He came to die for all of us.
So the greater sin is the sin of not accepting Jesus as Savior. This leaves that individual unrepentant in sin when it does not have to be. There is an escape from sin through the death of Christ.
The greater sin is that of unbelief.
No matter what sin you mention; no matter which Commandment you break it can be forgiven and covered by the blood of Christ.
It is their unbelief in Christ that billions will be condemned to the lake of fire at the great judgment.
Do not commit the greater sin any longer.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
