9/11 has rolled around again. It’s been 14 years since terrorist hijacked and flew commercial airliners into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
It was a terrible day in American history.
There have been many terrible days in American History.
April 12, 1861 – the day the un-Civil War started, a war in which nothing but Americans died.
September 8, 1900 – Around 6,000 died when a Category 4 hurricane made landfall on Galveston Island in Texas.
April 18, 1906 – the Great San Francisco earthquake, killing around 3,000 and destroying 80% of the city.
December 7, 1941 – the Japanese attack on the U. S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. Over 2,400 killed.
August 29, 2005 – Category 3 hurricane Katrina made landfall in southern Louisiana. The story compromised the levee system around New Orleans totally devastating the city. Over 1,200 die in its wake.
1962-63 – the Supreme Court handed down the decision that official prayer had no place in public education and school-sponsored Bible reading and recitation of the Lord’s Prayer unconstitutional.
January 22, 1973 – In a 7-2 ruling the justices of the Supreme Court declared laws prohibiting abortion violated a woman’s constitutional right to privacy. Abortion became legal. (BTW almost 57 million babies have died since that decision)
June 26, 2015 – the Supreme Court rules that any state ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, thus legalizing same-sex marriage.
It seems that many of the tragedies of the United States have been by attack of an enemy, natural disaster, or our own making.
I can’t help but believe the hand of God is in much of this. For a people whose very foundation stood upon the word of God and the free exercise of religion, we have come a long way backward.
“Son of man, when a land sins against Me by persistent unfaithfulness, I will stretch out My hand against it; I will cut off its supply of bread, send famine on it, and cut off man and beast from it. Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they would deliver only themselves by their righteousness,” says the Lord God. Ezek 14:13-14
We follow in the very footsteps of ancient Israel, who also forsook the word of the Lord and turned against Him.
They forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed. Judg 2:13-15
It is high time for repentance. It is high time to turn from our sick and wicked ways and seek God. It is high time for the church to rise up in fasting and prayer. It is high time for revival and to declare the Day of the Lord!
