Jimmy Carter was president from 1977 to 1981. I voted for him back then and the reason I did was because he professed to be a born-again Christian. He still does.
But I saw where the former president has come out in favor of same-sex marriage.
In a recent interview, which I read in USA Today, he said, “I believe Jesus would. I don’t have any verse in scripture. … I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that’s just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else.”
You have to be careful the words you put in the mouth of Jesus. Even Christian’s! Maybe I should say especially Christian’s.
The authority of Jesus must always come from the scripture. Now, granted, the former president admitted he did not have any verse in scripture.
Allow me to use scripture.
First Jesus said,
“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” Matt 5:17-18
So if He did not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it then He did not go against it. In fact, for Him to be Messiah and sinless He had to live the Law to the fullest.
What did the Law say?
Lev 20:13 – If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.
Now I believe if a homosexual was thrown before Jesus and the crowd demanded that he/she be killed for committing an abomination, that Jesus would have loved that person and spared them from death.
Can I prove this with scripture?
Adultery was also punishable by death and in John 8 is the story of a woman caught in the very act of adultery. She was thrown in front of Jesus and the crowd demanded justice under the Law.
His words were,
“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” John 8:7
He did not deny that she was adulterous. And He did not deny that she had sinned saying to her,
“Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” John 8:11
He told her to live and not sin anymore even though under the Law she was condemned to death.
I know what you are thinking – He didn’t condemn her either!
Jesus did not come to condemn the world. He said,
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
“He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. John 3:17-20
Condmenation? You are already condemned under the Law. You are worthy of death under the Law. You’re only hope is in Jesus.
Jesus did not come to get rid of the Law and change the death penalty on those that have sinned. He came to give life by His Life and through His death.
One other scripture the former president should have seen. You see there have always been questions about the marriage relationship, even in Jesus’ time.
Jesus quoted from the O. T. scripture about the marriage relationship by saying,
“Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matt 19:4-6
His definition of marriage is crystal clear – a man is joined to his wife, a woman!
Perhaps the problem is in His first question – Have you not read?
Evidently many haven’t!
Read the Bible and don’t put words in the Savior’s mouth!
So whether you’re an adulterer or homosexual you stand condemned under the Law. Yet you have a Savior who invites you to obtain forgiveness and a new “go and sin no more” life from Him!
