A young man walks into a church. He sits down for an hour during a Bible study. Then he becomes violent, pulls a gun, and fatally shoots nine parishioners, including the pastor.
You can read about this from many sources. Some will say it’s a racist problem. Someone else will say it’s a gun control problem. Another will say it’s a white supremacist problem. Then it’s a mental illness problem.
I believe it’s a sin problem. Sin produces death!
Each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:14-15
Sin is evident by what is called the works of the flesh. God was gracious enough to give us a list of those things.
Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Gal 5:19-21
I know it sounds like I’m saying that if this young man was religious this would not have happened.
I’m not saying that. There are lots of religious people around the world. The men that flew planes into the World Trade Center were religious.
The Crusades were based on religion.
Religion doesn’t change people for the better and religion does nothing against sin.
Jesus does! It’s not religion – it’s a relationship. Jesus died to conquer sin. That’s not to say that Christian’s do not sin but the person that desires to live for Christ and be led by the Holy Spirit will repent of sin – not give into it!
Those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:24
When you live for Christ it is evident in your life by what the Holy Spirit is producing through your life.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Gal 5:22-23
It is very important for born again believers to reach out to everyone with the Gospel of Jesus. Not only that but to disciple new believers and teach them the word of God; to pray for other believers and to have some accountability with each other.
It’s not easy to overcome sin. Only one Man was able to do it. And He offers you help to overcome the affect and desire of sin in your life.
