I remember a Sunday school teacher from many, many years ago. Our study was in Acts chapter 9 – the conversion of Paul. In the story a man named Ananias comes to him after the encounter on the Damascus road.
It was at this point the teacher told us that this was the same Ananias that had previously lied to the church leaders in chapter 5. But now he was saved and doing the Lord’s work.
I had to speak up and so I said, “Well, he must’ve been resurrected also because that Ananias died!”
I’m convinced that many people know just enough Bible to know nothing at all. Christian’s should be well versed in scripture – knowing the truth and rightly dividing the word of truth.
In the days following the death of King Solomon, Israel was divided into two kingdoms. The northern kingdom was given to Jereboam.
Therefore the king asked advice, made two calves of gold, and said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt!” 1 Kings 12:28
Since it is later declared that Israel committed idolatry, this act paved the way. The people knew just enough scripture to recall the story but not reject the offer of idolatry.
Had they known the scripture they would have torn down the pagan altars and rid themselves of anything that wasn’t Yahweh!
Today there are many false gospels being preached and presented with millions swallowing it up.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – READ YOUR BIBLE! Learn God’s word for yourself. Know the truth and you’ll recognize the counterfeit.
