What do you care about the most?
Is it your family? Your job? School? Sports?
There is something in your life that takes priority over everything else.
Jesus said, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matt 6:19-21
But everyone has something that is treasured above everything else.
In the Old Testament, the army of Israel was going up against their old enemy the Philistines.
“What is all the noise about?” Eli asked. The messenger rushed over to Eli, who was ninety-eight years old and blind. He said to Eli, “I have just come from the battlefield—I was there this very day.”
“What happened, my son?” Eli demanded.
“Israel has been defeated by the Philistines,” the messenger replied.
To this Eli made no reply.
“The people have been slaughtered, and your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were also killed.”
Many people lost their lives that day including his own two sons but Eli had no reaction.
And the Ark of God has been captured.”
When the messenger mentioned what had happened to the Ark of God, Eli fell backward from his seat beside the gate. He broke his neck and died, for he was old and overweight. 1 Sam 4:14-18
Eli’s treasure was not the army or his family – it was God!
Keeping God first in your life takes a lot of effort and work. There are plenty of things to tempt you away from Him.
You can have the best of both when you treasure God more than anything else. Jesus said, “ Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matt 6:33
I think the “everything you need” may also include time for not only family, work, and school. But for leisure time too!
To have the most rewarding life possible involves getting your priorities in order. No matter what may follow, God should be at the top!
