Yesterdays Morning Thought was about the courage to stand in the face of temptation.
Today I want to continue along those lines.
First, a word of caution from God’s word – if you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. 1 Cor 10:12
When you successfully stand against temptation there is a little sense of relief and pride. That’s not a bad thing unless it builds and gives you a false sense of security that you can do this on your own or that it’s over.
Temptation is a boomerang – it will come back!
Jesus was tempted three times by Satan, who left only to tempt Him again later. However Jesus was tempted many other times by people. So He understands how you feel in temptation, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. Heb 4:15
I want to remind you that temptation is not sin! Sin is the act against God that you commit when you give into temptation.
James makes this quite clear – Each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:14-15
You will be tempted in the weakest area of your life; where you are most vulnerable. You will not be tempted with drugs if your weakness is alcohol. Satan knows your Achilles heel.
So since Satan knows your game plan is there a way to avoid giving in to temptation?
Yes! The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. 1 Cor 10:13
Your temptations are not unique. There are others that have also faced them. And God always give you a way out so you can endure or escape.
What is this escape? Again the Bible gives the answer – how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, Heb 2:3
Salvation is in Jesus and He is your way of escape.
Jesus said to pray, “do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matt 6:13
He also said to watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. Mark 14:38
It seems your greatest weapon against temptation is prayer!
Seek God and turn away from what entices you.
But there is more and I’ll continue with this tomorrow.
