Transformed by Reading God’s Word

read-bibleWhile at church camp I ran into Joe and family one day. As we were talking Joe said, “Well like he said in The Shootist…” and then he said a quote from that movie.
I thought that funny because one of the lessons would ask questions about quotes from your favorite movie.
Joe looked at his wife and said, “What is my favorite movie?”
I said, “It’s not The Shootist?”
“No”, he said.
I looked at him and said, “Outlaw Josey Wales!”
“Right!” and we both had a laugh then started saying quotes from the movie.

I know lots of quotes from movies like Outlaw Josey Wales, Anne of Green Gables, Forest Gump, and so on.
I’m also able to sing a lot of songs that play on the radio.
Movies lines and songs; but then I struggle sometimes with quoting scripture.

The ability to remember scripture is not the problem, after all, you can remember lines from movies and lyrics to a lot of songs.

Why do you think Bible verses are so much harder than songs or movies to remember?
If we are to be honest then the problem is how much time we spend in God’s word.

Rom 12:2 do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Reading the Bible can help renew your mind by providing a solid foundation!
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
“But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matt 7:24-27

What is the most important part of your house? It is the foundation!
Jesus used the idea of the foundation of a house and compared it to God’s word.
Notice what that said – everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built a house on a firm foundation.
Reading and putting God’s word into practice is the foundation of a renewed mind. Likewise, not listening is deemed foolish!

Reading God’s word will renew your mind by providing direction.
There was a time when you would have an atlas or a folding map to get from here to there. Now with SatNav devices and smartphones that is a thing of the past.
But these devices still give you directions!
When you bake a cake you read and follow the directions on the package.
Directions are a part of life.

God’s word gives direction for your life – Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
Direct my steps by Your word, And let no iniquity have dominion over me. Ps 119:133

Reading God’s word will renew your mind by exposing sin in your life.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 2 Tim 3:16
It points out what is wrong, convicts of sin teaches us.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Heb 4:12

When you read God’s word your mind is renewed by the memory of His Word!
I struggle with memory these days – names, picking up things at the store, or remembering appointments.
I read God’s word everyday but sometimes struggle with quoting it or remembering the book, chapter, and verse.
Then again, reading God’s word is not just for the sake of quoting it to someone else, but it is so you will not sin against God.
Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. Ps 119:11

The only way to know God’s word is to spend more time in God’s word, just like watching that movie or listening to that song over and over and over.
Start working on it. Try one verse a week. By the end of the year you will have 52 verses memorized.

Reading and knowing God’s word will renew your mind!

Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Josh 1:7-9
